This is fair warning…

September 27th, 2006 by Catazon

The Yankee just bought her plane ticket to come party with me once I can walk again. Those of you that can keep up (which shouldn’t be that hard to do with someone who just got out of a cast), you’re welcome to come, too! The itinerary is on my calendar for the weekend of October 20th. Oh, and when I say party, I mean there are no significant others involved in this whatsoever. Honkytonk!

Southern Brawl

September 26th, 2006 by Catazon

I haven’t been talking about it much, because the jealousy over some of my favorite people getting another chance to skate an interleague bout is consuming me…AND I CAN’T EVEN WALK!!! Still, the excitement is building, though that may be mostly due to my indecision over what to wear.

Banned Books Week

September 25th, 2006 by Catazon

Every once in a while, I remember I’m a librarian, and as such, I have a duty to the profession.  Banned Books Week is one of those times.  Thankfully, I’m not a public or school librarian who has to regularly deal with challenges, but I did attend a religious high school that occasionally confiscated my reading material.  We’re talking some very racy stuff, too!

I’m not going to jump on my libertarian soapbox and start yelling about rights, because that’s just not me.  I will encourage you to read my personal favorite on the list of the most challenged books of 2005, Forever by Judy Blume.  My mom bought it for me way back in the 1980′s when it first came out, and it pretty much summed up the teenage angst I was feeling.  I know I read it more than once.  How trashy!

I Hate Laying in Bed and Doing Nothing!

September 24th, 2006 by Catazon

Just when I was starting to get used to carrying around a little extra weight on one of my legs and going more places, I came down with some sort of yucky stomach thing. For the past three days, the toilet and the bed have been monopolizing my time. Blegh! Thank God it was this weekend, when I didn’t have plans for something like, hmmmm, watching my derby sisters play an interleague bout at the Verizon Wireless Theatre.

The Cast is ON!

September 13th, 2006 by Catazon

And displaying its brilliantly beautiful Brawler spirit!

MySpace post on the same topic:
The Cast is ON!

As everyone can see from my profile pic, the cast is indeed on. Four more weeks of bondage, then I get to see how much more my calf muscle resembles some old lady’s upper arm saddlebags. GROSS!!!

I can’t put if off any longer

September 12th, 2006 by Catazon

It’s been posted on houstonrollerderby.com, so I guess I should talk about it.  The inaugural season is over, and it ended just as everyone expected.  If my season had not ended about 60 minutes sooner than it should have, maybe the outcome would have been different, but alas, the Sirens won the 2006 championship.

I’m not going to dwell on it…I’m looking forward to our next event where HRD takes on the Dallas Derby Devils.  You might recall that a couple of weeks ago, the Devils travel team smoked the HRD travel team in Austin.  We were missing some key players, and I expect a much better showing on October 1st.  Stay tuned for more information…we need to pack the Verizon Wireless Theater so our chances of using the venue next year will improve.

In case anybody still cares…

September 8th, 2006 by Catazon

I made it into work for a couple of hours yesterday. I felt obligated to let the new students attending orientation last night know that they can indeed take advantage of a real live librarian once they start classes in October. Now my ankle feels obligated to let me know that I moved around too much.

I hope it doesn’t hate me as much on Sunday after I finish celebrating the Brawlers stealing the first HRD Championship from the Sirens.

I just got back…

September 3rd, 2006 by Catazon

from watching the Stars Across Texas tournament in Austin.  Houston Roller Derby‘s HaRD Knocks team did not do as well as expected, but at least we did not finish last.  I’m not even sure it would have been any different if I could have played.  Seeing your team lose like that makes you doubt your own skills, especially when the only skill you have right now is the ability to maneuver crutches without breaking the other ankle.  However, I’m in a much better mood in general, just because I was there!

I’m not a total invalid!

I got to go watch the HaRD Knocks play in Austin. I seriously didn’t think I would make it, but I actually got some semi-decent sleep and felt much better Sunday morning than Saturday morning. Unfortunately, HRD came in third, but some up-and-coming skaters got some good experience out there. They made me proud to be a part of HRD.
