The Joys of Librarianship

June 29th, 2006 by Catazon

Can someone please tell me how a person with a college degree, presumably a Master’s since the person in question is teaching college-level business courses, cannot figure out how to send an email with an attachment? Also, please tell me how a person as mean as I am can manage a smile and kind words as the person with no common sense leaves the library. Did I get a Master’s degree for this?

Dream Interpretation

June 20th, 2006 by Catazon

If you dream that your husband is dead and then, later in the night, dream that you killed someone, does that mean that you REALLY ARE going to kill your husband?

Posted on my other blog…
“If you dream that your husband is dead and then, later in the night, dream that you killed someone, does that mean that you REALLY ARE going to kill your husband?”

I skated on Sunday and felt like I did back in November. I can’t bend over very long yet without getting stuck there, which wasn’t very helpful doing a 20-minute endurance drill. And I can’t do high impact, which means no toe-stop starts or jumping. Good news is I’m not wincing when I sneeze as of this morning, so I should be back to my old ass-kicking self shortly.

Then all I’ll have to worry about is whether or not Disney was right.

Bout 5, where are you?

June 15th, 2006 by Catazon

Like I said in the last post, Houston Roller Derby now has a long break between bouts. However, you should go ahead and get your tickets now. Put the flyer up on your fridge to remind you where you’ll be on July 16th.

Time for a Break

June 15th, 2006 by Catazon

Time for five glorious weeks off between bouts, in the middle of which is a holiday! I know my whole team needs the extra time to regroup after the Bettie beating. Not that we get a break from derby altogether, because we still practice at least three times a week, but it just feels better to have five weeks between bouts rather than three. See details on Bout #5 in the next post.

Speaking of the July 4th, my plans include watching my first roller derby. Doesn’t that sound weird since I’ve already played in four bouts? Honestly, I haven’t sat down and watched a full bout in person, and I will be going to see the Texas Rollergirls in Austin on July 2nd. I can’t wait to see who I’ll be putting on the floor at the next national tournament.

The Agony of Defeat

June 12th, 2006 by Catazon

It was painful…it was excruciating…it was hard to watch.  No, I’m not talking about Catazon’s bruised tailbone that took her out of the bout in the first jam of the second half, although that pretty much summed up being elbowed out of bounds after the whistle blew.  I’m talking about no penalties being called for episodes like that.  I’m talking about a team trying to pick up the slack from losing four of their best players while seemingly being continually punished for past transgressions.  I’m talking about the quality of play that should be getting cleaner as we progress through the season but is instead getting dirtier.  I have my own theories on “dirty” play but can’t ethically voice them in a public forum.  I guess you can surmise from my tone that the Brawlers lost again.  It still hurts to think about it, but it’s not as painful as the throbbing in my nether regions.

Which is more painful?

Losing to the Betties or bruising my tailbone in the process? For those of you who care and aren’t throwing elbows and late hits in my general direction…the tailbone is healing much quicker than the agony of defeat. Maybe not back on the skates by Wednesday but definitely by this weekend, and I’ll be good to go for some bachelorette antics Saturday night.

To My Future Employers:

June 7th, 2006 by Catazon

The big deal in job hunting these days is that everyone gets Googled. Fortunately for me, when my real name is Googled, neither this website nor my myspace page is found. Isn’t it great to be a rollergirl and have an alias? Although it’s not that hard to link my real name with my derby name, I’m going to assume that most people just don’t have the time. With that said, here’s what this post is really about…

My next employer should refrain from pressuring me to work 50+ hours a week. As you can see from this blog, I have a rather demanding personal life that doesn’t allow me to work long hours. I have no problem with working through lunch or staying 30 minutes late or coming in every once in a while on a Saturday to help out with student orientations, but when my hours are posted on the door of the library and on the library website and on countless pieces of library propaganda, don’t expect me to greatly deviate from them. Doing so tends to cause confusion for everyone involved. I feel that my devotion to my job when I am here (the same devotion that makes me skip lunch and stay late and come in for special functions) is sufficient enough for a “salaried” employee. So there, you pompous administrators, and if I never work as a professional again, at least I’ll still have my health and my happiness.
