Here’s the article you’ve been waiting for…

May 30th, 2006 by Catazon

Good Bad Girls ran in the early Sunday edition of the Houston Chronicle on May 27, 2006. Most of the quotes in there came out of Catazon’s mouth. It’s a great article, but they didn’t include a picture of me. Mistilla made the front page of the early edition. Isn’t that special?

Only 3 Weeks Away!

May 22nd, 2006 by Catazon

Once again, we have a short break between bouts. At least the drama will stay fresh in everyone’s minds. However, I’m looking forward to June when we will have more than a month to rest in between Bout 4 and Bout 5. Just don’t forget about Houston Roller Derby this summer. Talk about hot!

Burlesque Brawlers vs. Psych Ward Sirens

May 22nd, 2006 by Catazon

The Brawlers are no longer undefeated, and Catazon can no longer say that she won’t start a fight.

Final score: Brawlers – 56, Sirens – 90.

That’s all I have to say about that for now.

Roller Derby Reborn

Includes a video clip of Catazon’s best hit from Houston Roller Derby‘s first bout. (Chron.com finally took the video down as 9/2009…the bastards!)

MySpace post on same topic:
See a video clip of Catazon’s best hit from the first bout. No, not the one where I took out MY jammer…the one where I snuck up on Beverly Kills. Shit like this makes me love derby all over again.

More Good News about Last Week

May 15th, 2006 by Catazon

One thing I forgot to mention in the post about my bad week was that Fox 26 was filming at practice and my team decided that I should be the Brawler interviewee. Sorry, but I also failed to mention that it aired on Fox Sports Xtra last night. No complaints on my interview clip (I’m just a big, dorky librarian anyway), but the sports guy included the clip of me taking out my teammate. I feel so much better now that the moment is immortalized, and sarcasm is just one of the services we offer.

MySpace post on same topic:
Did you see me on the news last night?

Fox 26 immortalized me taking out my own teammate for the rest of the season.

(Insert sarcasm here…) That makes me feel so much better about it.

Librarians are such dorks!

Bad Week

May 11th, 2006 by Catazon

First, my boss resigned, or was more likely forced to resign.

Then, our office manager informed us that there is no paper in the building and there won’t be any until Friday, leaving me to deal with a couple of hundred angry students that pay way too much to go to this school to have to worry about not being able to print their presentation that is due in ten minutes.

Next, I found out that my best friend not only had to put one of her dogs out of misery this week, but two.

So I show up at derby practice Wednesday night expecting to relieve some stress and ended up creating more. While working on blocking skills with one of my teammates, my big boat feet tripped her up, and she came down hard on her knee. It really did not sound or look good, and I’ve been there before. Did I mention that this is one of our best skaters? We CANNOT lose her before the biggest game of the season. Not wanting to do any further damage, I refrain from engaging anyone else until our head trainer decides he wants a shot at me. I’d usually give him a run for his money, but he took me out this time. Oh, I will remember that.

It’s only Thursday…what will happen next?

Bout 3 Only 18 Days Away!

May 2nd, 2006 by Catazon

Here we go again…the shameless self-promotion that will precede each of Houston Roller Derby‘s bouts.

Tickets are already on sale online.

Catazon should have some to sell very soon. Although we were extremely happy with the turnout for Bout 2, we would really like to sell out each bout. If you like what you see, don’t miss a bout. That’s the only way you can ensure that derby will continue to be one of your entertainment choices. It’s getting better all the time…

Burlesque Brawlers vs. Bayou City Bosses

May 1st, 2006 by Catazon

Another win for the Brawlers, 72-70. That makes us want to get really close to each other…
Brawler Victory

The night was marked by questionable calls by the referees. Even audience members realized that a jammer in the penalty box at the start of a jam cannot score points until the second time she passes through the pack, although the Bosses were able to score points immediately upon coming out the penalty box…twice. Hmmm?

Then what may also be a questionable call in the final jam put the Bosses’ jammer in the penalty box for the remainder of the period, allowing the Brawlers’ jammer to score unmatched points. The Brawlers’ blockers will all say that the call was fair, of course, because that particular jammer had been using her hands all night, but a lot of people think the Bosses were robbed. I personally think justice prevailed for the mistakes in the first half.

Hopefully, by the third bout, the referees will read over their rules a few more times and begin paying more attention to what is going on in the game. It will be a battle of the undefeateds, with the Brawlers going up against the Psych Ward Sirens. I think we all have our work cut out for us.

Brawlers Prevail…

despite questionable calls by the referees. The first half was marked by confusion over whether or not a jammer in the penalty box at the start of the jam can come on out and start scoring immediately. BTW, she can’t, but somehow the Bosses did…twice. So the Brawlers were down a point at halftime when they should have been up by at least ten.

Then, with under two minutes left in the game and the Brawlers down by six, the Bosses’ jammer was sent to the penalty box, leaving the Brawlers’ jammer to score unmatched points. Patsy Crime successfully passed eight Bosses to put the Brawlers ahead by two! I’ll never forget that feeling of watching the scoreboard and seeing 72-70 flash up, especially since I wasn’t able to contribute much to the win although I jammed my ass off (back-to-back, as a matter of fact!).

It was truly a team effort for the Brawlers this bout, and much love and respect is sent to the Bosses as truly magnificent opponents. On to the Sirens May 20th…
